Dhamm al-Ghiba wa-l-NamimaIbn Abi al-Dunya

67 – Yahya ibn Ayyub narrated to us; Ismaʿil ibn Jaʿfar narrated; al-ʿAlaʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Rahman informed me, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do you know what backbiting is?” They replied, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “It is your mentioning about your brother something he would dislike.” Someone asked, “What if what I say is actually in him?” He answered, “If what you say about him is true, you have indeed backbitten him; but if it is not in him, then you have slandered him.”
