79 – Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us; my father narrated to me. He added: Wāṣil, the client of Abū ʿUyaynah, also narrated to me; he said: Khālid ibn ʿUrfaṭah narrated to me, from Ṭalḥah ibn Nāfiʿ—who is Abū Sufyān—from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

“We were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when the stench of a decaying carcass drifted toward us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, ‘Do you know what this odor is? It is the odor of those who backbite the believers.’”
