49 – Dawud b. ʿAmr al-Dabbi narrated to us; Ismaʿil b. ʿAyyash narrated to us; Thalabah b. Muslim al-Khathʿami narrated to me, from Ayyub b. Bashir al-ʿIjli, from Shufayy b. Matiʿ al-Asbahi, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Four types of people add to the agony already suffered by the inhabitants of Hell. They rush between the scalding water and the blazing fire, crying out, ‘Woe and ruin!’ Some of the people of Hell will say to others, ‘What is the matter with these men? They have afflicted us on top of the torment we are already enduring!’
He said: one is a man shut inside a chest of burning coals; another is a man dragging his own intestines; another is a man from whose mouth pus and blood pour forth; and another is a man devouring his own flesh. It will be said to the one who is eating his flesh, ‘What is with this outcast? He has tormented us ⦗21⦘ over and above what we already suffer!’ He will reply, ‘That outcast used to consume people’s flesh by backbiting and walk about spreading slander.’”
