38 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn ʿAli narrated to us; al-Nadr ibn Shumayl narrated to us; Abu al-ʿAwām—whose name is ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rabīʿ al-Bāhilī—reported to us; Abu al-Zubayr—whose name is Muhammad—narrated to us, from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“We were traveling with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he passed by two graves whose occupants were being punished. He said, ‘They are not being punished for something that was difficult to avoid. Alas! One of them used to backbite people, and the other would not protect himself from his urine.’
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then called for a fresh palm frond—or two—broke them and ordered that each piece be planted on a grave. He said, ‘Their punishment will be lightened for as long as these remain fresh and have not yet dried out.’”
