34 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Khalaf ibn Hisham narrated to us; Abu Shihab narrated to us; Hisham al-Dastuwaʾi informed me, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once invited a woman to eat. She was known to let her tongue slip, so she said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am fasting.’ ⦗17⦘ He replied, ‘You have not truly fasted.’

“On another day she watched herself a little more carefully. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ again invited her to eat, and she said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am fasting.’ He said, ‘You almost did—but you still have not fasted.’

“On the third day she guarded herself well. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ invited her and she said, ‘Messenger of Allah, I am fasting,’ he replied, ‘Now you have fasted.’”
