Dhamm al-Ghiba wa-l-NamimaIbn Abi al-Dunya

32 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ali ibn al-Jaʿd narrated to us; al-Rabiʿ ibn Sabīḥ informed us, from Yazīd al-Raqāshī, from Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

The Prophet ﷺ ordered us to fast on a particular day and said: “Let no one break his fast until I grant him leave.” The people obeyed and kept the fast. When evening came, a man would approach and say, “Messenger of Allah, I have remained fasting all day; allow me to break my fast.” He would give him permission, and then another man, and another, until one man came and said, “Messenger of Allah, two young women from your household have been fasting all day, but they are too shy to come to you themselves. Grant them permission to break their fast.”

He turned away from the man. The man returned to him, and again he turned away. When he came a third time, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “They have not really fasted. How can someone be considered fasting who has spent the day eating people’s flesh? Go and instruct them—if they were truly fasting—to induce vomiting.”

He went back ⦗16⦘ to them and delivered the instruction. They vomited, and each of them brought up a clot of blood. He then returned to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him. The Prophet ﷺ said, “By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, had that (clot) remained in their stomachs, the Fire would have consumed them.”
