112 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿĪsā narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Sulaymān, that Ismāʿīl ibn Yaḥyā al-Maʿāfirī informed him, from Sahl ibn Muʿādh ibn Anas al-Juhanī, from his father, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever protects a believer from a hypocrite by warding off his backbiting, Allah will appoint an angel on the Day of Resurrection to shield that person’s flesh from the Fire of Hell. And whoever hounds a Muslim with something, seeking thereby to disgrace him, Allah will detain him on the Bridge over Jahannam until he is freed from the consequences of what he said.”
