109 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Khalaf ibn Hisham narrated to us; Abū Shihāb narrated to us; from al-Aʿmash; from Abū Wāʾil, that ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—said:

“What is stopping you, when you see a foolish person tearing at people’s reputations, from confronting him?” They answered, “We are afraid of his sharp tongue.” He replied, “That brings you perilously close to losing your standing as witnesses.”
