O cherished son, do no wrong in Mecca—
not to the lowly, nor to the great.
Guard its sanctities; and let not
the Great Deceiver beguile you about Allah.
My son, whoever commits injustice in Mecca
will meet the farthest reaches of evil.
Allah has made even its wild beasts secure,
and birds perch unharmed on Mount Thabir.
A Tubbaʿ once visited its people
and clothed the Sacred House in finest brocade.
But the Elephant destroyed his Ethiopian host—
they were pelted there with stones.
So heed, when you have had experience,
and grasp how all affairs eventually end.
