19 – ʿAbbās ibn Hishām narrated to me, from his father, from Maʿrūf ibn Kharbūdh, who said:

“After them the wrongdoing was taken up by Banū al-Subayʿah. Al-Subayʿah was the daughter of Lāḥib ibn Dabnaba ibn Khuzaymah ibn ʿAwf ibn Naṣr ibn Muʿāwiyah ibn Bakr ibn Hawāzin. She married ʿAbd Manāf ibn Kaʿb ibn Saʿd ibn ʿAmr ibn Murrah ibn Kaʿb ibn Luʾayy and bore him Khālid, known as al-Sūfī, from whose line came Abū al-ʿAsham. Al-Sūfī was a violent man, notorious for tyranny and evil. As for Abū al-ʿAsham and his kinsmen, they pitched their encampment at Dhirāʿ al-ʿĀmiriyyah near ʿUkāẓ.

Their oppression multiplied, and one night they heard a voice from a mountain among the mountains of Mecca proclaiming:

[Wāfir metre]
Say to the sons of Subayʿah: you have overstepped;
Soon you will taste the outcome of that deed.
Just as the sons of al-Sabbāq once tasted it—
For tyranny’s fare is always harsh indeed.

So they took warning and desisted, and a remnant of them survived. Al-Subayʿah would advise her son Khālid, saying, ‘My dear son, do not wrong anyone in Mecca, whether lowly or great.’”
