Al-YaqinIbn Abi al-Dunya

40 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Misʿar al-Yarbuʿī, who said:

ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with him) asked al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), “How great is the distance between faith and certainty?”
He replied, “Four finger-breadths.”
ʿAlī said, “Explain.”
He answered, “Certainty is what your eye can see, ⦗53⦘ whereas faith is what your ear hears and affirms.”
ʿAlī then said, “I testify that you are truly of the stock from which you spring—offspring, one from another.”
