39 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Shaqīq narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn ⦗52⦘ al-Ashʿath narrated to us, from Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, who said:
People said to Jesus, “By what power do you walk upon the water?” He replied, “By faith and certainty.” They asked, “If we believe as you believe and possess the same certainty you possess, may we walk as well?” He said, “Then walk.”
So they walked with him, but when the waves rose up they drowned. Jesus said to them, “What happened to you?” They answered, “We were afraid of the wave.” He said, “Did you not fear the Lord of the wave?”
He then drew them out of the water, struck his hands upon the ground, grasped something, and opened them. In one hand was gold, and in the other a clod of earth—or pebbles. He asked, “Which of these is sweeter to your hearts?” They replied, “The gold.” He said, “To me they are the same.”
