31 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us; Sufyān narrated, from Abū Hārūn al-Madīnī, who said:
Ibn Masʿūd said, “Certainty is that you do not curry favor with people at the cost of Allah’s displeasure; that you thank no one for what is, in reality, Allah’s provision; and that you blame no one for what Allah has not granted you. Provision is not drawn by the eagerness of the eager, nor is it pushed away by the aversion of the averse. Indeed, Allah, in His justice, knowledge, and forbearance, has placed relief and comfort in certainty and contentment, and He has placed anxiety and sorrow in doubt and resentment.”
