29 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAli ibn Ibrahim al-Yashkuri narrated; Musa ibn Ismaʿil al-Jabali narrated; Hafs ibn ⦗46⦘ Sulayman Abu Muqatil narrated, from ʿAwn ibn Abi Shaddad, from al-Hasan, who said:

Luqman said to his son, “My son, good deeds are only attainable through firm certainty, and whoever’s certainty weakens, his deeds will likewise weaken.”

He also said to him, “My son: if Satan comes to you sowing doubt and suspicion, defeat him with conviction and sound understanding. If he attacks through laziness and weariness, overcome him by remembering the grave and its constriction. And if he comes through longing and fear, inform him that this world is something one merely engages with for a moment before abandoning it.”
