Example Seven:
Hadith no. 196, p. 302
al-Naṣīḥah, pp. 152–153
70 – Jabir reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade coating graves with plaster and writing on them…
This ḥadith reaches us through two separate lines of transmission. It was the second line that al-Albani—may Allah have mercy on him—authenticated in Irwāʾ, only to reconsider it later in al-Naṣīḥah. His retraction, however, concerned that second chain alone; the ḥadith itself remains established through the first chain, which meets Muslim’s criteria. See Aḥkām al-Janāʾiz, p. 204, Islamic Office edition.
Given this, is it proper to place the ḥadith under the heading “From Authentication to Weakening,” thereby suggesting to readers that al-Albani shifted from declaring the ḥadith authentic to declaring it weak?
