The author of Iʿlām bi-Ākhir Aḥkām al-Albānī launched a severe attack on the author of Tarājuʿ al-Albānī. He granted him no excuse for the slips he had made and used extremely harsh language against him—yet he himself fell into the very same faults he censured in others.
I shall cite two examples of the errors committed by the author of Iʿlām:
First example
In section four of the book, entitled “From ‘Sound—excluding the words inside the brackets’ to ‘Sound in its entirety,’” the author cites ḥadīth no. 283, p. 185:
– “Allah the Exalted has sent down the disease and the cure, and He has appointed for every disease a remedy, so seek treatment, but do not treat yourselves with what is unlawful.”
Narrated by Ṭ. in al-Kabīr from Umm al-Dardāʾ, and by D. from Abū al-Dardāʾ.
Initial grading: Sound, excluding the bracketed words — Takhrīj al-Mishkāt ⦗4538⦘
Later grading: Sound in full — al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah ⦗1633⦘
End quote.
The author then repeats the same report in section five, “From Weak to ‘Sound—excluding the bracketed words,’” ḥadīth no. 291, p. 193:
– “Allah the Exalted has sent down the disease and the cure, and He has appointed for every disease a remedy, so seek treatment, but do not treat yourselves with what is unlawful.”
Narrated by Ṭ. in al-Kabīr from Umm al-Dardāʾ, and by D. from Abū al-Dardāʾ.
First verdict: Weak — Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ ⦗1569⦘
Final verdict: Sound, excluding the bracketed words — al-Mishkāt ⦗4538⦘; Hidāyat al-Ruwāh ⦗4464⦘
Second example
Likewise, in section four—“From ‘Sound—excluding the bracketed words’ to ‘Sound in its entirety’”—he cites ḥadīth no. 286, p. 186:
286 – ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the verse, “And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants …” (Q 7:172). He continued:
“…and they act according to the deeds of the people of Paradise,” then he passed his hand over his back, “…but if a servant is created for the Fire, he is employed in the deeds of the people of the Fire until he dies performing an act of the people of the Fire, and by that act he enters the Fire.”
Narrated by Mālik, Aḥmad, D., T., and Ḥ. from ʿUmar.
Initial grading: Sound, excluding the bracketed words — Takhrīj al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah ⦗220⦘, p. 240
Later grading: Sound in full — Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd ⦗4703⦘
End quote.
He repeats the same narration in section five, “From Weak to ‘Sound—excluding the bracketed words,’” ḥadīth no. 294, p. 194:
294 – ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about the verse, “And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their loins, their descendants …” (Q 7:172). He continued:
“…and they act according to the deeds of the people of Paradise,” then he passed his hand over his back, “…but if a servant is created for the Fire, he is employed in the deeds of the people of the Fire until he dies performing an act of the people of the Fire, and by that act he enters the Fire.”
Narrated by Mālik, Aḥmad, T., and Ḥākim from ʿUmar.
First verdict: Weak — Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ ⦗1602⦘
Final verdict: Sound, excluding the bracketed words — Takhrīj al-Ṭaḥāwiyyah ⦗220⦘, p. 240
End quote.
