Continuation…
Hadith no. 51 states: “I have married you to one who is no impostor—meaning ʿAlī.”
The report from which the Shaykh withdrew his earlier authentication is: “ʿAlī sought from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the hand of Fāṭimah, whereupon he said, ‘She is yours, provided you treat her well.’ ”
It is recorded in al-Ṣaḥīḥah (no. 166), after which the Shaykh graded it weak in al-Ḍaʿīfah (12/880–883) under hadith no. 6392.
And Allah knows best.
Muḥammad al-Ḥasan’s emendations end here.

Abū Taqī al-Dīn al-Jazāʾirī then asked:
“Dear brother, may I pose a question?
In those places where the Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him, explicitly stated that he moved from one judgment to another, the matter is settled.
But in those instances where he did not mention such a retraction, how did you determine which opinion is correct?”
Muḥammad Abū ʿUmar replied:
“It was merely a personal effort on my part, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness for any error I may have attributed to the Shaykh.
Many ḥadiths can in fact be traced to the Shaykh’s position by noting the year in which a given one of his beneficial works was written and compiled—such as Ṣaḥīḥ and Ḍaʿīf al-Mawārid, Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb (Maʿārif edition), and so forth.
And Allah knows best.
