9/ ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Āmir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared, “Do not resent daughters, for they are cherished, comforting companions.”
• Sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
• The Shaykh had earlier ruled it weak in Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ (p. 905, no. 6268) and referred to al-Ḍaʿīfah no. 4793.
• He later retracted and authenticated it in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/627–628, no. 3206.
10/ ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Which of creation strikes you as possessing the most remarkable faith?”
They replied, “The angels.”
He said, “How could they not believe when they stand before their Lord?”
They said, “Then the prophets.”
He said, “And why would they not believe while revelation comes down to them?”
They said, “Then us.”
He said, “What prevents you from believing while I am among you?”
They said, “Then who, O Messenger of Allah?”
He said, “Verily, the creatures whose faith amazes me most are a people who will come after you. They will find written pages containing a Book and will believe in all that is written therein.”
• Good (ḥasan).
• The Shaykh had first graded it weak in al-Ḍaʿīfah 2/102–103, no. 647.
• He later reconsidered and declared it good in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/654–657, no. 3215.
11/ ‘Alqamah ibn Nājah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that, in the Year of al-Muraysiʿ after they had embraced Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, “Part of the perfection of your Islam is that you pay the zakah due on your wealth.”
He also told them that same year, “I shall send someone to you who will collect your zakah.”
• Good due to corroboration (ḥasan li-ghayrih).
• The Shaykh had classed it weak, omitting it from the early prints of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb and listing it in Ḍaʿīf al-Targhīb 1/236, no. 457.
• He later graded it good in al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/705–707, no. 3232.
12/ Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the sale of animals whose udders had been tied and distended by withholding their milk (al-muḥafalāt).
• The Shaykh had earlier deemed it weak in Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ (p. 873, no. 6062) and in al-Ḍaʿīfah no. 4726.
• He later strengthened it in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/713.
13/ Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
I was travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One morning, as I drew near him along the road, I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed that will admit me to Paradise and keep me far from the Fire.”
He answered, “You have asked about something tremendous, yet it is easy for whomever Allah makes it easy: worship Allah without associating anything with Him, establish the prayer, pay the zakah, fast the month of Ramadan, and perform the pilgrimage to the House.”
He then said, “Shall I not point you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sin just as water extinguishes fire; and a man’s prayer in the depths of the night—” and he recited, “Their sides forsake their beds…” until he reached, “…they used to do.”
Then he said, “Shall I tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its peak?”
I said, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.”
He said, “The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and its peak is jihād.”
He added, “Shall I inform you of the controlling point of all of that?”
I said, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He took hold of his tongue and said, “Keep this in check.”
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, will we really be taken to task for what we say?”
He replied, “May your mother lose you, Mu‘ādh! Are people hurled into the Fire on their faces—or on their nostrils—on the Day of Resurrection for anything other than the harvest of their tongues?”
• The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—had earlier labelled the full report weak at length in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl 2/138–141, authenticating only the phrase, “Its peak is jihād.”
• He subsequently revisited the narration, affirmed its overall strength, and authenticated in particular the wording, “May your mother lose you, Mu‘ādh… the harvest of their tongues,” in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/845–846, no. 3284; he also deemed it sound by corroboration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb, no. 2866.
14/ Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whoever loves his worldly life will harm his Hereafter, and whoever loves his Hereafter will harm his worldly life, so give preference to what endures over what perishes.”
• Good (ḥasan).
• The Shaykh had earlier graded it weak in Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ (p. 771, no. 5340), with cross-references to Mishkāt 5179 and al-Ḍaʿīfah no. 5650.
• He later re-evaluated it as good in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/850.
15/ ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘Āṣ (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Sa‘d while he was performing wuḍūʾ and said, “What is this extravagance, O Sa‘d?”
He replied, “Is there extravagance even in ablution?”
He said, “Yes, even if you were at a flowing river.”
• Good (ḥasan).
• The Shaykh had earlier ruled it weak in Irwāʾ al-Ghalīl 1/171, no. 140; al-Radd ‘alā Balīq p. 98; Ḍaʿīf Ibn Mājah (p. 35, no. 425, old ed.); and Mishkāt 1/133, no. 427.
• He later declared it good in al-Silsilah al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7/860–861, no. 3292.
The foregoing material is drawn from a study prepared by one of the brothers based on al-Ṣaḥīḥah 7. The following is my own supplement to that research:
16/ Al-Barāʾ ibn ‘Āzib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) we would stand in our rows for a long while before he pronounced the opening takbīr. He also said, “Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who stand nearest the first rows, and no step is dearer to Allah than one a man takes to complete a row.”
• Sound due to corroboration (ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrih).
• The Shaykh had judged it weak in the Sunan and in Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ.
• He later stated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb 507 that it is sound due to corroboration.
17/ Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“The nobles of my community are the guardians of the Qur’an and the people of the night.”
• Sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
• The Shaykh had earlier labelled it fabricated in al-Ḍaʿīfah 2416 and weak in Ḍaʿīf al-Targhīb wa-l-Tarhīb 366.
