(71) Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Let each of you ask his Lord for all his needs, even for the thong of his sandal when it breaks.” Mishkāt 2251. In another version, transmitted from Thābit al-Bunānī as a mursal report, it adds: “—for salt, and for the thong of his sandal when it breaks.” Mishkāt 2252. The Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) says, “It is a ḥasan ḥadīth.” It is also listed in al-Ḍaʿīfah 1362; see likewise al-Tirmidhī 3604 (vol. 8).

The following aḥādīth are ones that the Shaykh later re-graded—from ṣaḥīḥ to ḥasan or the reverse:
(1) “When a group passes by, it is enough that one of them give the salām, and when they are seated it is enough that one of them reply.” Al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib, 3rd ed. The Shaykh wrote: “A ḥasan ḥadīth, transmitted by Aḥmad and al-Bayhaqī. Its chain is weak, but supporting narrations strengthen it.” The report also appears in al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib (Maʿārif), p. 200. He adds: “I had traced it in al-Irwāʾ 3/242 (ḥadīth 778), then found further witnesses which I documented in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 1147, 1148 and 1412; thus the ḥadīth is now ṣaḥīḥ—praise be to Allah.”
(2) “The Lord’s pleasure is in a father’s pleasure, and His displeasure is in a father’s displeasure.” Al-Ṣaḥīḥah 516. The Shaykh writes: “I have withdrawn my earlier agreement with al-Hākim and al-Dhahabī that the ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ according to Muslim’s criteria; indeed I have retracted my authentication of al-Hākim’s chain altogether. Nevertheless, detailed study leads me to say that, taken collectively, its routes raise it at least to the rank of ḥasan.” See Ṣaḥīḥ al-Targhīb 2501; al-Adab al-Mufrad 2; Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ 3506.
(3) “I am amazed at people who are dragged to Paradise in chains even though they dislike it.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ 3983—first graded ḥasan. It is also in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 2874, where, after citing supporting chains, the Shaykh says: “In light of this documentation I have upgraded it to ṣaḥīḥ, as is clear from the totality of its routes.”
(4) An elderly woman came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah that He admit me to Paradise.” He replied, “No old woman will enter Paradise.” Ghāyat al-Marām 375—first graded ḥasan. The report also appears in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 2987. The Shaykh comments: “Note: I had produced the ḥadīth in some of my works, such as Ghāyat al-Marām, rating it ḥasan; it has now gained further strength through this ṣaḥīḥ route, together with what is mentioned in the exegesis of the verse ‘Indeed, We have created them anew.’”
(5) Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays (may Allah be pleased with her) said the Prophet ﷺ told her: “Shall I not teach you words to say at times of distress—or in distress: ‘Allah, Allah is my Lord; I associate nothing with Him’?” Al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib 121 (3rd ed.). The Shaykh initially graded it ḥasan. It also appears in al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib (Maʿārif), p. 118, and in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 2755, where—after citing another chain and two corroborating narrations—the Shaykh states: “My ruling on the report now differs from what I wrote earlier in the notes to al-Kalim al-Ṭayyib; it is now ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi, and it gains additional strength from the route of Asmāʾ and the corroborations from ʿĀʾishah and Ibn ʿAbbās.”
(6) “When any of you applies kohl, let him do so an odd number of times; and when he perfumes himself with incense, let him do so an odd number of times.” Al-Ṣaḥīḥah 1260. The Shaykh first concluded: “Taken together, the chains render the ḥadīth ḥasan, if Allah wills.” Later, in the addendum at the end of volume three, p. 491 (258–25), after mentioning another route, he writes: “The ḥadīth has now been confirmed as ṣaḥīḥ. Praise be to Allah.”
Corrections and notices:
(1) “Ḥaḍramawt is better than Banī al-Ḥārith.” Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ 2726. The ḥadīth is actually in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 3051. The Shaykh says: “Important notice: the ḥadīth slipped by mistake into Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ 2726, whereas it belongs in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ. Transfer it there, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him.”
(2) “There will be rulers; you will recognise and condemn them. Whoever loathes (their wrongdoing) is absolved, and whoever denounces is safe, but whoever is pleased and follows is not absolved.” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ 3618—recorded by Muslim and Abū Dāwūd from Umm Salamah. The ḥadīth is also in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 3007, p. 15. The Shaykh states: “At the end of Umm Salamah’s narration in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ 3618 the extra phrase ‘is not absolved’ (lam yabraʾ) appears, but it has no basis in any of the sources we cited; it should therefore be deleted.”
(3) “There is no day on which Allah frees more servants (or a female slave) from Hell than the Day of ʿArafah. He draws near and then boasts of them to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people desire?’” Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ 5796—recorded by Muslim, al-Nasāʾī and Ibn Mājah from ʿĀʾishah. It is also in al-Ṣaḥīḥah 2551. The Shaykh remarks: “Second notice: al-Suyūṭī cited the ḥadīth in al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr with the wording ‘a servant or a female slave’, but this addition ‘or a female slave’ (aw amatan) has no basis with them or with anyone else who transmitted the report. The addition escaped the author of al-Fath al-Kabīr when he merged it into al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr, and it escaped me as well when I divided al-Fath into Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr wa Ziyādatuh and Ḍaʿīf al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīر wa Ziyādatuh, so I included the ḥadīth in the first part under number 5672. Whoever owns that edition should note that the addition has no foundation.” In the third edition of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ it is number 5796.
