Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

83 – Azhar related to me; he said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; he said: Hawshab narrated to me; he said: A man came and put a question while I was present ⦗56⦘. He said, “O Abū Saʿīd, there is a man to whom Allah has granted wealth, and from it he gives charity, maintains family ties, and does good deeds. Is it lawful for him to live in comfort?”—meaning to indulge in luxury. Al-Ḥasan answered, “No. Even if the whole world belonged to him, he would still be entitled to no more than bare sufficiency, and he should send the rest ahead for the Day when he will be poor and in need.”
