81 – Suraij ibn Yunus narrated to us; he said: Abu Sufyan al-Maʿmari narrated to us, from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhri, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Ibn ʿAbbas, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
I entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and offered the greeting of peace. He was reclining on a coarse woven mat, and its strands had left marks on his side. I lifted my eyes around the room, and—by Allah—there was nothing to catch the gaze except three tanned hides. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to grant you greater comfort; Allah has already granted abundance to Persia and Byzantium, yet they do not worship Allah, Exalted is He.”
He then sat upright and said, “Are you in doubt, O son of al-Khattab? They are a people whose good things have been hastened for them in this worldly life.”
So I said, “Seek forgiveness for me, O Messenger of Allah.”
