80 – ʿUbayd Allah ibn Jarir al-ʿAtaki narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr narrated to us; he said: Abu ʿAwanah, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, who said: I heard al-Hasan ibn Abi al-Hasan relate the following:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out riding his mount. As he passed the stump of a palm tree, it caught one of his fingers and wrenched it. He then returned to his family, and they set up for him a bed braided from palm fronds, spread a piece of coarse cloak beneath it, and placed under his head a leather cushion stuffed with palm fibre. When ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, heard of this he hurried over, and in one corner of the room were some hides whose foul smell had spread. He said, “O Messenger of Allah, does this odor not trouble you? ⦗55⦘ Shall I move them away? I bear witness that you are more honored before Allah than Chosroes and Caesar, who recline on brocade, fine silk, heavy silk and plain silk upon couches of gold and silver.”
He replied, “Are you not content that they have this world while we have the Hereafter?” He said, “Indeed.” He said, “Then so shall it be, if Allah wills.”
