79 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Muʿāwiyah al-Jumaḥī narrated to us; he said: Thābit ibn Yazīd narrated to us; he said: Hilāl ibn Khabbāb transmitted, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās — may Allah be pleased with them — who said:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb — may Allah be pleased with him — entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while the Prophet was lying on a woven mat whose rough strands had left marks on his side. ʿUmar said, “O Messenger of Allah, would you not use a mattress softer than this?” He replied, “What have I to do with the world, and what has the world to do with me? By Him in whose hand is my soul, my likeness and the likeness of this world are only that of a traveler who sets out on a scorching summer day, then seeks the shade of a tree for a short part of the day, after which he rises and leaves it behind.”
