69 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī narrated to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Fuḍayl say: It has reached me that a man whose soul was taken up said: “Suddenly I found myself before a woman standing in the middle of the road ⦗51⦘, adorned with every kind of jewelry and finery. No one passed by her without being scratched and wounded. When she turned away, she was the most beautiful sight people had ever seen; but when she faced them, she was the ugliest thing they had ever beheld—an old crone, grey-haired, blue-eyed, bleary-eyed. I exclaimed, ‘I seek refuge with Allah from you!’ She replied, ‘No, by Allah, Allah will not grant you refuge from me until you come to hate the dirham.’ I asked, ‘Who are you?’ She said, ‘Do you not recognize me?’ I answered, ‘No.’ She said, ‘I am the world (al-dunyā).’
