Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

63 – Al-Ḥakam ibn Mūsā narrated to us; al-Khalīl ibn Abī al-Khalīl related; from Ṣāliḥ ibn Abī Shuʿayb, who said:

Allah revealed to Jesus, son of Mary—peace be upon him—saying:

“Give Me, within your own self, the place of your deepest concern; make Me the treasure you store away for your final return. Draw near to Me by voluntary devotions and I will draw you near; rely on Me and I shall suffice you; and do not turn to anyone but Me, or I will abandon you.

Be patient under trial, content with My decree, and be as I wish you to be, for My good pleasure is that I be obeyed and not defied. Stay close to Me; keep My remembrance alive upon your tongue; let My love dwell in your heart. Stay wakeful for My sake in the hours of heedlessness, and be before Me both ascetic and ardently desirous—mortify your heart with reverent fear.

Keep vigil through the night seeking My pleasure; thirst by day for My sake—for the Day that awaits you with Me. Strive with all your might in good works; stand among My creation upholding My justice; judge them in accordance with My counsel. I have sent down to you a cure for the misgivings of the breast—the disease of Satan—a clearing of the sight and a lifting of the veil of dullness. Do not sit inert like a cushion, as though buried while still alive and breathing.

In truth I say to you: no vicegerent has believed in Me without humbling himself before Me, and none has humbled himself before Me without hoping for My reward. I call you to witness that he is safe from My punishment so long as he does not alter or replace My way.

Anoint your eyes with the kohl of grief when the idlers laugh; beware of what is coming in the Afterlife—its quakes, terrors, and hardships—when neither wealth, nor family, nor children will avail. Weep over yourself in the days of life like one who has bidden his loved ones farewell, become weary of the world, left its pleasures to their devotees, and fixed his desire on what is with his Lord. In all of that be patient, seeking the reward. ⦗49⦘ Glad tidings to you if there reaches you what I have promised the patient.

Withdraw from the world a day at a time; be content with bare sufficiency from it, and let what is coarse therein suffice you. Taste the flavor of what has already slipped away—where is its taste now? And of what has yet to come—where is its delight? Had your eyes seen what I have prepared for My righteous allies, your heart would melt and your soul would depart out of longing for it.”
