555 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me, from a shaykh of the Fazārah tribe, who said: I heard Abū Khālid al-Sūrī—one of the quietest of men—saying, “O Allah, ⦗234⦘ remove me from the neighborhood of Iblis and bring me into Your neighborhood.”
Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān then recited to me:
By your life! This world is no true dwelling for its folk;
were they to think aright, they would all live in dread.
The passing hours search only for decay,
and the days can end in nothing but bereavement.
