544 – Al-Hārith b. Muḥammad narrated to me, from Abū al-Ḥasan al-Qurashī, who said: Abū Ḥāzim remarked, “Whoever truly understands this world will neither rejoice when it prospers nor grieve when it afflicts.”
Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kinānī then recited to me:
A youth to whom the world cried, “Take!”—yet he would not take,
Seeing it, from chastity and honor, as no more than a mote in the eye.
A youth who fixed his gaze upon the Quran,
Carrying out from it whatever was declared lawful and whatever was forbidden.
