529 – Abū ʿAlī al-Madāʾinī narrated to us; Fitr ibn Ḥammād ibn Wāqid related; my father related; he said: I heard Mālik ibn Dīnār say, “People keep saying, ‘Mālik is an ascetic, Mālik is an ascetic!’ What sort of renunciation is Mālik supposed to have when he owns nothing more than a simple tunic and cloak? The true ascetic is ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz: the world came to him with its mouth wide open, and he turned his back on it.”
