53 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to us; he said: Khalid ibn Yazid al-Qarani told me; Abu Shihab, from a man of the tribe of ʿAbd al-Qays, that Hudhayfah used to say:

“Not a morning or an evening passes without a herald calling out, ‘People, prepare to depart! Prepare to depart!’ The confirmation of this is found in the Book of Allah: ‘Indeed, it is one of the greatest signs— a warning to mankind— for whoever among you wishes to advance’ (al-Muddaththir 74:36),” he said, “that is, toward death; ‘or to stay behind’ (al-Muddaththir 74:37),” he added, “that too refers to death.”
