518 – ʿAwn ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī narrated to me. He said, “I heard a tutor of the people of Basra, known as Abū Ghassān. A young man came to him and said, ‘O Abū Ghassān!’ He replied, ‘Welcome, my dear.’ The youth asked, ‘When does the world detach itself from the heart?’ Abū Ghassān answered, ‘When firm resolve takes hold, the world departs from the heart and the heart rises into the heavenly kingdom; but if that resolve is absent, the heart is thrown into turmoil and returns to the world.’
