517 – A man who had heard Ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī narrated to me: Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mawṣilī ⦗223⦘ told me, “Abū Muslim, the attendant of al-Aʿmash, related to me, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, who said: ‘They used to pursue the life of this world, but when they reached the age of forty they began to seek the Hereafter.’ I reported this to al-Muʿāfā ibn ʿImrān, and he liked it. I asked him, ‘O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, how does one seek the Hereafter after the age of forty?’ He replied, ‘By living on a day’s provision, day by day.’
