507 – Hārūn ibn Ibrāhīm al-Imām narrated to me; Zayd ibn al-Hubāb narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah narrated to us; my brother ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUbaydah informed me, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, that Musʿab ibn ʿUmayr once came forward wearing a rough striped cloak that could scarcely cover him, while the Prophet ﷺ was seated with a group of his Companions. When they saw him, they lowered their gaze, for they had nothing to offer him. The Prophet ﷺ spoke highly of him. After Musʿab had given his greeting, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“I remember seeing him with his parents—no youth of Quraysh was his equal in the honor and luxury they bestowed upon him—yet he gave all that up seeking Allah’s pleasure and the support of His Messenger. Indeed, it will not be long before you conquer Persia and Byzantium; then one of you will go out in the morning in one suit of clothes and return in the evening in another, and platters of food will be set before you morning and evening.”
