503 – Muḥammad ibn ʿUmārah related to us; Qabīṣah related to us; Sufyān, from al-Ṣalt ibn Bahram, from al-Ḥasan, who said: “Whenever the world is spread out for anyone, it is only a deception.”
Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān recited to me:
I stand surety for the seeker of this world
with cares unending, never brought to a close;
with humiliation in life devoid of honor,
and poverty that never widens into wealth; ⦗215⦘
with preoccupations that leave no respite,
and ceaseless toil hour after hour;
with a greed that keeps him ever enslaved—
and the slave of greed will never rise high.
