494 – Muḥammad ibn Idrīs related to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Ṣāliḥ informed me; Qatariyy al-Khashshāb narrated; from ʿAbd al-Wārith; from Anas ibn Mālik, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“When the Day of Resurrection comes, my community will divide into three groups. One group will have worshipped Allah for worldly gain; another will have worshipped Him out of riyāʾ (ostentation) and sumʿa (seeking praise); and a third will have worshipped Him solely for His Face and for His Abode.
He will say to those who worshipped Him for the world: ‘By My might, My majesty, and My exalted station, what did you intend by your worship of Me?’ They will reply: ‘By Your might, Your majesty, and Your exalted station—riyāʾ and sumʿa.’ He will declare: ‘I accepted nothing of that. Take them to the Fire.’
Then He will say to those who worshipped Him for His Face and His Abode: ‘By My might, My majesty, and My exalted station, what did you intend by your worship of Me?’ They will answer: ‘By Your might, Your majesty, and Your exalted station—Your Face and Your Abode.’ He will say: ‘You have spoken the truth. Lead them to Paradise.’”
