493 – Muḥammad ibn Idrīs related to us; ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān narrated; ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak reported that Salām ibn Abī Muṭīʿ said:
“Zuhd (detachment from the world) is of three kinds. First: that one devote both deed and speech solely to Allah, seeking nothing of this world thereby. Second: to abandon whatever is unbefitting and to act upon what is fitting. Third: to renounce even what is lawful—this is a voluntary practice and the lowest of the three levels.”
