Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

465 – Muḥammad ibn Idrīs narrated to me; he said: I heard al-ʿAbbās al-Khallāl say: Sābiq al-Barbarī (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

You have become mere carcasses for Death to seize,
Just as the beasts of this world are carcasses for you.
The admonitions you are given do not restrain you,
Whereas the unweaned flock heeds the shepherd and is checked.
They feel no loss when they diminish their religion—out of ignorance;
But if their worldly share decreases, they are quick to feel it.
After Adam himself has departed, do you still long for endless life?
Can branches survive once the root has been uprooted?
Remembrance never benefits a heart that has grown hard;
Even stone is scarred by the rope that rubs against it.
