456 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān related, on the authority of a man from Quraysh:
A man wrote to his brother:
“To proceed: treat the day you are now living as an honored guest, and supply it with your righteousness before it takes leave of you. Beware lest any of its hours rise upon you bearing sorrow. Peace.”
Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān also recited to us, quoting al-Mughīra ibn Ḥabnāʾ:
A new day battles with me, and a single night as well;
Together they have consumed my life, and every vigorous youth will fade.
Whenever I shed one month, I pull another down with it;
Sufficient is my undoing—the passing of months and the dawning of each new crescent.
