454 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, related to me; he said: ʿAmmār ibn ʿUmar al-Bajalī told me; he said: I heard ʿUmar ibn Dharr say:
“Work for your own souls—may Allah have mercy on you—while this night and its darkness are still upon you. The one who is truly cheated is he who is deprived of the good of night and day, and the one who is truly forlorn is he who is barred from the benefit of them both. Night and day were made only as a pathway for the believers to obey their Lord, but for others they become a liability because of their heedlessness toward themselves. So revive your souls for Allah with His remembrance, for hearts live only through remembering Allah. How many a worshipper standing before Allah on this very night will rejoice over his vigil when he finds himself in the darkness of his grave; and how many a sleeper tonight will regret his long slumber tomorrow when he beholds the honor Allah, Exalted is He, grants the devoted. Therefore seize the passing hours, the nights, and the days—may Allah have mercy on you.”
