Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

446 – Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn related to me, saying: al-Minhāl ibn Yaḥyā al-Baṣrī narrated to me, saying: Iyās ibn Ḥamzah—-a man from Bahrain—-told me that a Qurashī woman named Mājidah, who lived in Bahrain, once said:

"The rising and setting of the sun have folded away my hopes. Whenever the slightest movement is heard or a single foot is set down, I imagine death to be right behind it."

Abū Jaʿfar al-Qurashī then recited to me:
[metre: al-Baḥr al-Rajaz]
Do not let the one you watch beguile you from yourself;
link your very senses to reflection on the Day of Return.
Waste not the bitter day in which you now awake
as you squandered the day that has already passed.
The earlier generations were consumed by the turning of their sun;
after them, the turning of your own sun will consume you in turn.
