432 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn related to me; he said: Mutayr ibn al-Rabiʿ told me:
Mufaddal ibn Yunus, whenever night descended, would say, “A complete day of my life has gone.” And whenever morning dawned he would say, “A whole night of my life has passed.”
When the time of his death drew near he wept and said, “I have always known that, because you two—night and day—keep revolving over me, there would come a day whose anguish is severe, whose choking pain is severe, whose sorrow is severe, whose turbulence is severe. There is no god but the One who created death for His creatures and made it an act of justice among His servants.”
He then began to recite, “He who created death and life so that He may test you …” (al-Mulk 67:2). After that he breathed his last and passed away—may Allah have mercy on him.
