407 – Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmar al-Makkī and Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm related to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd al-Muqrīʾ. He said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Ayyūb narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Walīd told me, saying: I heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥujayrah transmit from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that whenever he sat down he would say:

“You are moving with the passing of night and day through lifespans that are steadily diminishing, while your deeds are being recorded, and death comes suddenly. Whoever sows good will soon harvest it in hopeful anticipation, and whoever sows evil will soon harvest it in regret. Every farmer reaps what he has sown: the slow will not be deprived of his allotted share, nor will the greedy obtain what has not been decreed for him. Whoever receives good, it is Allah who has granted it; whoever is shielded from evil, it is Allah who has protected him. The God-fearing are the nobility, the scholars are the leaders, and sitting in their company is pure gain.”
