Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

395 – Muhammad ibn al-ʿAbbas narrated to us; he said: ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar related to us; he said: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us; he said: Yazid ibn Hazim related to us; he said: ⦗178⦘

Suleiman ibn ʿAbd al-Malik used to address us every Friday, and in the course of his sermon he would say:

“Behold! The people of this world live in it full of apprehension; no settled resolve has ever reached its end for them, nor has any dwelling afforded them repose, until the decree of Allah overtakes them while they remain in that state. Likewise, its delights never last, nor are its sudden disasters to be trusted. In the end, the worst of its inhabitants are the ones who remain.”

He then recited: “Have you considered: if We allow them to enjoy themselves for years, and then what they were promised comes to them, of what benefit to them will be all that they used to enjoy?” (al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:205-207).
