383 – Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to me, saying: ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān informed us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh informed us; he said: Ibn Luhayʿah reported to us, from ʿUmārah ibn Ghaziyyah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said:
“I complain to Allah of a fault I do not abandon and of a virtue I never attain; in truth, we weep over religion only to gain the world.”
Abū Saʿīd al-Madīnī then recited to us, on behalf of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUrwah:
They shed their tears for religion—but only to win the world and its glitter;
World-seekers all, each one athirst for its lure.
No thought do they give to the home that awaits them;
They have hurried to seize their portion of the blatant, passing life.
Guidance they neither have nor give to those who follow;
The one who is led is lost, and lost is the leader who should guide.
