381 – Abū Bakr ibn Aḥmad ibn Quraysh, numbered 102369, narrated to me, saying: al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ said:
Hārūn al-Rashīd once addressed the people. Leaning against the Sacred House, he declared, “O people, this world is a deceiver. It destroyed the nations who came before you, and it is destined to destroy those who remain. Therefore, do not let the world beguile you.”
Al-Fuḍayl continued, “His words moved me to tears, and I was amazed at his action.”
Abū al-Ḥasan al-Bāhilī then recited to me:
Beware of death, for death snatches souls away;
Spurn the world, and meet its face with a stern, grim face.
