Al-ZuhdIbn Abi al-Dunya

371 – Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Thaqafi related to me, from Abdullah ibn Salih, who said: Dawud al-Taʾi remarked, “O child of Adam, you rejoiced at attaining your desire, yet you reached it only by the passing of another portion of your appointed term. Then you put off righteous deeds, as though their benefit were meant for someone other than you.”

Muhammad ibn Ishaq also recited to me:

Who rides through a day whose dangers leave him never sure,
And through a night whose hidden snare awaits beyond this world,
How can he relish life or find its pleasures pure?
How can his eyes taste sleep when looming fears are hurled?
