364 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to us; he said: Dawud ibn al-Muhabbar narrated to me; he said: Salih al-Murri narrated to me; he said: a man from the tribe of Azd narrated to me that he heard ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz say in his sermon:
“Do not let this world and the respite granted within it deceive you. Before long you will be removed from it and will depart for another abode. So fear Allah—fear Allah, servants of Allah—regarding your own souls. Seize the opportunity before it escapes you, before death descends. Do not allow the term to drag on, causing your hearts to harden, such that you become like people who were summoned to claim their portion but, after the respite, fell short, only to regret their negligence when the Hereafter arrived.”
He said: Then he sobbed while standing on the pulpit.
