360 – Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; Jarir narrated, from ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from Abu al-Bakhtari and Maysarah, who said: ʿAli—may Allah honor his face—distributed everything that was in the Bayt al-Mal (state treasury) until nothing remained except four thousand. He then ordered that this sum, too, be divided, and it was. When someone remonstrated with him about that, he replied, “No, by Allah! Not until sheep have left their droppings in it.”
