353 – Muhammad ibn Qudamah related to me, from one of his teachers, that ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwan once stood at the grave of Muʿawiyah, over which a tiny shoot swayed and blossomed. He remarked, “Praise be to Allah: twenty years a governor and twenty years a caliph, and in the end you came to this. What are time and its passing days but what you see here—either the loss of wealth or the parting of a loved one.”
