341 – Ṣāliḥ ibn Mālik narrated to us; he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Muslim al-Juʿfī, the guide of al-Aʿmash, narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd said:
“I once entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was asleep in an upper room of his that looked like a pigeon-loft. He lay on a woven mat whose strands had left marks on his skin, so I began to wipe them away and tears filled my eyes. He said, ‘O ʿAbd Allāh, what makes you weep?’ I replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I remembered Khosrow and Caesar reclining on silk and brocade.’ He said, ‘Are you not content that the worldly life belongs to them while the Hereafter is ours? My connection to this world is only like that of a traveler who, on a scorching summer day, passed by, took shade beneath a tree, and when he had cooled off, mounted his ride and went on his way.’”
