327 – Al-Hasan ibn ʿIsa narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak transmitted to us; he said: Maʿmar and Yunus related, from al-Zuhri, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, who reported that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him that ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf—an ally of Banu ʿAmir ibn Luʾay and a participant at Badr alongside the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—told him:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, dispatched Abu ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrah to Bahrain to bring back its jizya (tribute). He had previously made a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and appointed al-ʿAlaʾ ibn al-Hadrami as their governor. Abu ʿUbaydah returned with a large sum from Bahrain, and, when the Ansar heard of his arrival, they attended the dawn prayer with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. When he finished the prayer they drew close to him. The Messenger of Allah smiled when he saw them and said, “I take it you have heard that Abu ʿUbaydah has brought something back?” They replied, “Indeed, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Rejoice, and look forward to what will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you, but rather that the world will be opened up to you as it was opened up to those before you; you will compete over it as they competed, and it will destroy you just as it destroyed them.”
